Todd & the Fox creates banjo-driven, award-winning, venue-shaking, roots-rock and electronic music.
Emerging from the art-steeped, high desert crossroads of northern New Mexico, Todd & the Fox began as a side project for band members Todd Eric Lovato and Erik Sawyer in early 2011. The duo quickly found itself center stage and propelled to the forefront of the region's music scene, as audiences and music critics alike responded gleefully to the band's minimalist hybrid of dance-oriented roots, country, folk and electronic music.

ARCOS Dance presents‘500 Words or Less'
Location: The Performance Space 1583 Pacheco StreetEvent Type: Music/Nightlife
‘500 Words or Less' will highlight use of space with photographs and video art leading into the studio, a museum-like display of older communication devices, and dancing already in progress when the audience arrives. The focus of the Project continually changes location in the performance space throughout the evening, adding to the layered effect of its acts. “It's fun! The format allows us vignettes with a wrapper to tie them all together,” Artistic Director Curtis Uhlemann said. “We can't wait to keep designing more sound medleys and brainstorming. I love this!” Evoking the ‘disjointed coherence' of dream, memory, and consciousness, the atmosphere is further enhanced by writing on the floor, a stack of old televisions above, trees extending perpendicular to the wall, an umbrella chandelier, and a grand piano. “It's not purely narrative,” Gionfriddo said of the evening. “It's an experience tied together by dancers, music, and characters; it requires mental participation from the viewers.”

SFCA: Moscow Ballet Giselle
Location: Lensic Performing Arts Center 505 988 7050Event Type: Theater/Dance
With 400 lavish costumes, a magical set, and breathtaking folkloric backgrounds, Moscow Ballet’s Cinderella is an enchanting experience that proves dreams do come true. Cinderella is the endearing story of a young girl with a tender heart who finds good fortune, love and happiness through her acts of kindness. The ballet is based on the fairy tale written by the great French storyteller Charles Perrault (1628 – 1703), who also authored Sleeping Beauty, Puss and Boots, and Blue Beard.
True to the age-old fairy tale, Moscow Ballet’s Cinderella features a very bossy, unlikable Stepmother and two very vain stepsisters. Cinderella tries to befriend them, but her efforts are thwarted by their jealousy.
The lyric charm of the Cinderella story so moved the great Russian composer Sergey Prokoviev that he wrote a wonderful piece of music as soft and fragile as Cinderella herself. Choreographer Rostislav Zakharov (1907 - 1975) was an active and influential figure of Russian ballet while the Soviet Union was in power. While working with the Bolshoi, he choreographed Cinderella in 1945.

Felonious Groove Foundation
Location: Cowgirl Cafe 319 S Guadalupe St (505) 982-2565Event Type: Music/Nightlife
After a decade of award-winning, genre-bending music, the “Foundation” continues to please: For more than a decade, Felonious Groove Foundation, New Mexico's premier funk-Latin-rock contingent, has garnered a loyal following throughout the Southwest for its bombastic, freewheeling funk albums and dance-oriented, libation-fueled live performances. A little older and just a little wiser, the band continues to seal its reputation as one of the region's most relevant and tenacious bands. Felonious Groove Foundation has earned a reputation as the Golden Boy of New Mexico's music scene. In December 2007, the band was voted "Albuquerque" magazine's "Best Band Headed for Superstardom." The group's third album, Paper Tiger (Penguino Records, 2006), was nominated for 12 New Mexico Music Awards and took home a trophy for "Best Musical Production in Folk/Americana" for the track I Miss My Girl. F.G.F. is fresh off the release of “Felonious Groove Foundation Presents…Fantastic Planet,” a full-length album in which the collective reveals a more mature face, one driven by not only the funk and Latin of yore but by banjo and slide guitar-driven .
The band performs under Penguino Records, an independent record label based out of Santa Fe that houses F.G.F., Todd and the Fox and Cali Shaw. F.G.F. is a sought-after marquee headliner for local venues, as the well-known group is known for its packed shows and fun-loving audiences. The band also keeps its regional following alive through frequent tours of the Southwest, in the neighboring states of Colorado and Arizona. The band has shared the stage with such national acts as Dumpstaphunk (Neville brothers), Arrested Development, Fishbone, B Foundation, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, (of Dave Matthews fame), Los Mocosos, and (yes, even) the Backstreet Boys. Felonious Groove Foundation comprises Todd Eric Lovato (vocals, bass, guitar, lap steel, keys, banjo), Soberanes (vocals, guitar), Noah Wolters (vintage keys), Chadd James (saxophones), and Josh English (drums). The sound of the new F.G.F. album is best explained through its instrumentation, which is made up of a classic rock ‘n' roll (drums, bass, a pair of guitars), and some added twists. Intrigued by the pathos of alt.country and folk, the throwback charm of arpeggiated synthesizers and vintage keyboards and the irresistible four-on-the-floor thump of dance rock, Fantastic Planet draws inspiration from a variety of instruments including banjo, lap steel, subsonic bass, synths and melodica. “Fantastic Planet” is the band's second album recorded with award-winning Andrew Click of Stepbridge Studios behind the soundboard. The album was produced by Todd “Skinnyfat” Lovato. Original artwork for the album was produced by local illustrator and graphic artist Jon Sanchez, a recent finalist in the Poster Search and a tour poster artist for musical acts like Neko Case and Cursive.

Calligraphers Offer Free Demonstrations and Hands-On Tips
Location: New Mexico History Museum/Palace of the Governors 505-476-5200
As part of the new exhibitions Illuminating the Word: The Saint John's Bible and Contemplative Landscape, calligraphers from Albuquerque and Santa Fe will demonstrate a wide variety of book crafts in the History Museum's second-floor Gathering Space, through Saturday, April 7.
How do quills, ink and vellum work together? How delicate is gold leaf? How do you stitch a medieval book? How does your name look in calligraphic script? Come find out.
The calligraphers and bookbinders belong to Escribiente, Albuquerque's calligraphy guild, and the Santa Fe Book Arts Group. They plan to be available from 10 am to noon and 1-3 pm on Saturdays and Sundays, though winter weather may occasionally interrupt those plans. Keep an eye open during the week, too: Calligraphers sometimes show up and set up shop for the love of it. If you have a group of visitors coming at other times, call ahead and we'll work to arrange a demonstration. For such requests, call Tom Leech, director of the Palace Press, at 505-476-5096.
Bring your curiosity and your questions. Not only are the volunteers good at what they do, but they love to talk about the book arts.
Phone number for publication: 505-476-5200.
Image: Beth House, a member of Escribiente, works on a piece of Henry David Thoreau's musings about forest fires. For high-resolution versions of this and other images of the calligraphers working, contact Kate Nelson, below.

The Rattlerz
Location: Second Street Brewery @ the Railyard 505-982-3030
Beginning as a garage rock band, the Squash Blossom Boys played everything from jazz to reggae only to finally become a Bluegrass band. Odd as it may seem, the ensemble characterizes a new generation that does not define itself according to any one given style, movement, or genre of music. The Squash Blossom Boys are no exception. Influenced by the grunge rock of their youth, the virtuosity of Jazz music, and the finely tuned craftsmanship of acoustic instruments, the Boys retrofit Bluegrass to multitude of inspiration.

The 10-day Santa Fe Winter Fiesta, held January 27 through February 5, offers an exciting array of concerts, parties, culinary experiences, comedy, dining, shopping, hotel and ski discounts and more to help you beat the winter blues!
This is the second annual Winter Fiesta, and the schedule is packed full of fun events for everyone, whether you're a snow bird, a music lover, a foodie or a shopping hound. For details, visit the Winter Fiestawebsite.
Born into a family with generations-old roots in rural Florida, JJ Grey was raised with a combination of backwoods wisdom and old-school blue-collar values. He heard music at barbeques and in local juke joints, all the while developing a deep love and respect for the land and its culture. Grey's original songs are inspired by legendary musicians, including Southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd, soul greats Otis Redding and Toots Hibbert, country stars George Jones and Jerry Reed, as well as by Grand Ole Opry comedian Jerry Clower. Whether it is a narrative passed down to him from his grandmother or the tribulations of a childhood friend, Grey's ear for detail rings through in true storyteller fashion.
Debuting in 2001 with Blackwater, following up in 2004 with Lochloosa (both albums reissued by Alligator), Grey steadily built an intensely loyal following. In 2007 Grey released his Alligator debut, Country Ghetto, followed by 2008's Orange Blossoms, further growing his already large audience. With the release of 2010's Georgia Warhorse, Grey stepped further into the mainstream with the AAA radio breakout single The Sweetest Thing.
Grey, an avid outdoorsman, is a dedicated fisherman and surfer and holds an honorary position on the board of the Snook Foundation, dedicated to the protection of coastal fish and fish habitat. He has written passionately and articulately about his love for the untrammeled environment of his north Florida home.
After over a decade of hard touring and five studio albums Grey still spends eight months of the year on the road, bringing his music to his loyal, ever-growing, worldwide fan base, laying it all on the line with each and every performance. JJ has played countless festivals, including Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, Austin City Limits Festival, Byron Bay Blues Festival (Australia), Montreal Jazz Festival and Fuji Rock (Japan). Over the course of his career, Grey has shared stages with the likes of B.B. King, The Allman Brothers Band, The Black Crowes, Los Lobos, Jeff Beck, Ben Harper, Lenny Kravitz, Booker T. Jones, Mavis Staples and many others. In 2011 the band invaded the UK, leaving blissful fans and overwhelming praise in their wake. Also in 2011, Grey embarked on his first-ever solo tour, playing packed-to-capacity clubs, getting more personal and up close with his audience.
Grey's songs have appeared in film and network and cable television programs including House, Flashpoint, Crash, Friday Night Lights, The Deadliest Catch and the film The Hoot. In November 2009, JJ wrote his first film score for the critically acclaimed, Emmy Award-winning documentary The Good Soldier that appeared in theatres and on Bill Moyers Journal on PBS. In 2010, Grey played piano, sang and contributed a song (The Wrong Side) to Buckwheat Zydeco's Grammy-winning Alligator album Lay Your Burden Down.

Celebrate Black History Month
Location: Museum of International Folk Art 505 476 1203Event Type: Community,Historical,Music/Nightlife
Festivities commence when Akeem Ayanniyi and Agalu take the stage with a rousing West African drumming and dance performance. Agalu is a favorite at museum events and will perform at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
At 2 p.m. Vaunda Nelson, the New Mexico Centennial Children's Author, will talk about her award-winning book Almost to Freedom. The book tells the story of a young girl's dramatic escape from slavery via the Underground Railroad, from the perspective of her beloved rag doll. The black dolls in the museum's Girard Wing inspired Nelson to write this book. Nelson's skillfully told tale brings these dolls to life, telling their story as well as others who were escaping slavery, giving us a powerful view into the collective history of the United States.
This event is free to New Mexico residents with ID, Museum of New Mexico Foundation members, and youth under 17 years old.

Sara Petite @ Cowgirl
Location: Cowgirl BBQ (505) 982-2565
Country / Alt Country / Americana / Bluegrass singer/songwriter Sara Petite was raised where wild huckleberries grow. Sara originally hails from Sumner, Washington – a tulip farming town southeast of Seattle. She grew up riding in her Dad's seaplane and on the back of his motorcycle. Her mother raised a trio of women and a son, and gave each of them a strong backbone and sense of self. Being called everything from “Outlaw country” to “AAA singer-songwriter,” Petite's songs revive fond memories of history, home and travel. She has toured Europe 6 times and played various clubs, festivals and venues all over the United States and Europe. Her third independently released CD, Doghouse Rose, debut in the Americana Charts at #33 and rose to #22, and held in the charts for 14 weeks. It also rose to #9 in the Roots Rock Report.
Locally in 2009 she was the Best Americana Country Band in San Diego. No stranger to Europe, Petite was first introduced across the pond when her song “Coming Home” from her 2005 debut album of the same name was featured on the compilation CD “Country,” from Universal Music in France. The song and Petite were featured alongside legendary artists such as Tim McGraw, Reba McIntyre, Merle Haggard and Dolly Parton, with whom she's been compared. Not just an original voice, Petite is a natural songwriter, evidenced by the fact in her first-ever songwriting competition, three of her songs advanced in the International Songwriting Competition in 2005, with two making it to the semi-finals. Since then, she has been honored in the West Coast Songwriter's Competition; Great American Songwriter's Competition; Great Waters Folk Festival Song Contest (Top 5 finalist); San Diego Music Awards (2nd). In 2006, Petite earned the Grand Prize in the 2006 Portland Songwriting Contest. On stage, Petite has opened for such major headliners as Marty Stuart, Josh Turner, Shooter Jennings, Dave Alvin, Richie McDonald, John Eddie, Todd Snider, Ralph Stanley, Rhett Miller, Railroad Earth, Steve Poltz, Trent Thomlinson, Lance Miller and Bert Jansch.
