Weekly Story Time at Collected Works
Location: Collected Works Bookstore & Coffeehouse (877)988-4226/(505)988-4226Featured books cater to children aged 6 months to 5 years. Most sessions begin with simple but engaging books for the youngest listeners, and build to longer picture books, rhyming poems, our newest favorites, and some classics for the "big kids".
As attention spans vary, families are welcome to come and go as they wish--- we are delighted to host the group to its saturation point! Occasionally, we break into song if the children need movement or a change of pace. We also encourage dialogue as the stories are read and the audience's curiousity is piqued.
All children must be accompanied and upervised by an adult throughout the Story Time. Please come enjoy our gatherings and follow up with a visit to our cafe; nothing goes ith Story Time like a good snack!

Calligraphers Offer Free Demonstrations and Hands-On Tips
Location: New Mexico History Museum/Palace of the Governors 505-476-5200How do quills, ink and vellum work together? How delicate is gold leaf? How do you stitch a medieval book? How does your name look in calligraphic script? Come find out.
The calligraphers and bookbinders belong to Escribiente, Albuquerque's calligraphy guild, and the Santa Fe Book Arts Group. They plan to be available from 10 am to noon and 1-3 pm on Saturdays and Sundays, though winter weather may occasionally interrupt those plans. Keep an eye open during the week, too: Calligraphers sometimes show up and set up shop for the love of it. If you have a group of visitors coming at other times, call ahead and we'll work to arrange a demonstration. For such requests, call Tom Leech, director of the Palace Press, at 505-476-5096.
Bring your curiosity and your questions. Not only are the volunteers good at what they do, but they love to talk about the book arts.
Phone number for publication: 505-476-5200.
Image: Beth House, a member of Escribiente, works on a piece of Henry David Thoreau's musings about forest fires. For high-resolution versions of this and other images of the calligraphers working, contact Kate Nelson, below.

The program that took the Midwest by stormnow heads to the Southwest!
SOUTHWEST TOUR - March 4-11, 2012
Captivating Spanish and Italian love songs, castanets and driving foot percussion make this a memorable evening for classical, baroque and folk audiences. Nell Snaidas draws us into her world of 17th-century ballads, while Spanish dancer Steve Player sets sparks flying with daring improvisations. Passionate sonatas by Merula, Uccellini and Castello reach a redhot finish with Sorrell’s arrangement of Boccherini’s Fandango Quintet.

Sunday Spiritual Gathering
Location: Everyday Center for Spiritual Living 1380 Vegas Verdes 505-629-9633Calligraphers Offer Free Demonstrations and Hands-On Tips

SFCA: Orchestra of St. Petersburg
Location: Lensic Performing Arts Center 505 988 7050Event Type: Theater/Dance
It was initially known as the "Imperial Music Choir" and performed privately for the court of Alexander III of Russia. By the 1900s it had started to give public performances at the Philharmonia and elsewhere. Richard Strauss conducted the orchestra in 1912.
After the Russian Revolution the orchestra was taken over by its members, who changed the name to the "State Philharmonic Orchestra of Petrograd". In the 1920s the orchestra began receiving support from the state, and began to be known internationally as an excellent orchestra. Guest conductor appearances were made by Bruno Walter, Ernest Ansermet and Hans Knappertsbusch at this time. Around this time the orchestra was renamed the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra.
The orchestra gained its most fame under the lengthy directorship of Evgeny Mravinsky. The orchestra made few tours to the West, but the orchestra recorded a number of studio and live recordings under Mravinsky. Furthermore, it was under Mravinsky that the orchestra premiered seven of Shostakovich's symphonies.
In 1991 the orchestra gained its current name after its home city returned to its original name of Saint Petersburg. Today it is an internationally recognized symphony orchestra under the directorship of Yuri Temirkanov.

The strength of their show lies in world-known songs like “Kalinka”, “Donci-Molodci” etc. Alexander’s were the first who sung the song “Sojuz nerusimyj”, the anthem of Soviet Union. Along the Russian classical music you can hear Verdi’s hymn Immenso Jehova of Nabucco, Mosorskij’s “Raschodilas, razgujalas”, Meisn’s “Delilah” and many more. The choir survived many influences like Communism, Perestroika, wild Russian capitalism, difficult 90-ties, Saga of Putin and so on. Their interconnected emotions are expressed by their Russian professionalism. They have never used playback and emotionally they perform as the last one. Mit has been told who has never heard Alexander’s, cannot understand Russian spirit.

In the 1960s and 70s the landscape and image of the American West underwent a profound transformation--from endless frontier to the sprawling built environment underwriting a global economy. How did photographers, both professional and amateur, seek to make sense of this change through their work, and what can reviewing their images nearly 50 years on tell us about the complex relationship between visual culture and historical change as observed in the everyday environment?

As attention spans vary, families are welcome to come and go as they wish--- we are delighted to host the group to its saturation point! Occasionally, we break into song if the children need movement or a change of pace. We also encourage dialogue as the stories are read and the audience's curiousity is piqued.
All children must be accompanied and upervised by an adult throughout the Story Time. Please come enjoy our gatherings and follow up with a visit to our cafe; nothing goes ith Story Time like a good snack!

Rep Weave Placemats with Melodie Usher
Location: Espanola Valley Fiber Arts Center 505-747-3577In this class you will learn all about rep weave; what it is, how to plan it and how to weave it. To put your new knowledge to use, each student will plan and warp a loom to create a set of Rep Weave placemats. A choice of patterns will be available for each student to individualize so that everyone will be able to create a project that is uniquely theirs. The project will be planned and the weaving will be started in class but the student will finish the project on their own having learned everything required to complete a successful rep weave project. Melodie Usher has been working toward becoming a weaver her entire life.
After various majors and universities, Melodie's last major was Interior Design at Purdue University & she ran her own Interior Designer business in Cincinnati, Ohio. Life changed completely for Melodie when she inherited her Grandmother-in-Law's loom, a four shaft Bexell Cranbrook loom that was built in the late 1930's or early 1940's. Once the first warp was on Melodie found her true passion in life. The loom allowed Melodie to use her love of color and design as well as her love of textiles. In September of 2010 Melodie received her Certificate of Excellence in Weaving, Level I from the Handweaver's Guild of America.

Location: Marigold Arts 424 Canyon RoadVoss. Her contemporary creations are in collections throughout the United States,
Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Voss designs abstract, organic patterns, suggesting waves and winding paths.
Occasionally her designs are representational or figurative. Her colors hit the richest
notes in a natural spectrum. Inspired by the red cliffs and dramatic landscapes that
surround her property in Abiquiu, New Mexico (home to the Georgia O'Keeffe estate),
Voss is particularly drawn to rich, earthy reds.
Voss has been weaving rugs for three decades. She works with contemporary
materials, including fabric, textiles, vintage neck ties, and high-end loom factory waste,
(i.e., Pendleton selvage-edge strips, upholstery-industry cast-offs). When she works
with ties, she weaves them in a signature style, with the triangular ends exposed at the
edges of the rug in an organic, leaf-like design.

INTERNATIONALLY AWARD-WINNING BELISAMA IRISH DANCE TO PERFORM SIXTH ANNUAL‘RHYTHM OF FIRE'
Location: James A. Little Theater NM School for The Deaf 505-827-6760Event Type: Theater/Dance
Belisama Irish Dance presents the sixth annual ‘Rhythm of Fire' performance, March 16th, 17th, and 18th, 2012 at James A. Little Theater at the New Mexico School for the Deaf in Santa Fe, Friday and Saturday at 7:00pm and Sunday at 2:30pm. Recognized for internationally award-winning Irish dance, Belisama will perform both world premiere works and signature favorites from their repertoire. Styles span traditional Riverdance to contemporary, and the program includes live music. A fast-paced, high-energy show for the whole family, ‘Rhythm of Fire' will feature compositions by Artistic Director Adrienne Bellis, choreographer Michael Patrick Gallagher—former lead of Riverdance and current lead dancer in ‘Celtic Woman: Believe' on PBS and DVD—and Celia Kessler, Associate Artistic Director for ‘Rhythm of Fire.' Gallagher commented, “I was delighted to be asked to choreograph a number for the upcoming Belisama show. Belisama is one of the most innovative Irish dance groups currently performing in the western US, and the high caliber of the dancers made it a very easy and enjoyable experience.”
Set to the melodic accordion and triangle sounds of Beoga tune ‘Soggy's,' Gallagher's updated work for Belisama revisits a choice piece of new-traditional Irish music. “I had worked with the same piece of music for a show I did back in Ireland called ‘The Rising Step,' so it was interesting for me to revisit it with new dancers, a new perspective, and a new energy,” said Gallagher. A more avant-garde, raw arrangement, Kessler's ‘Mecanix' highlights mechanical undertones with the cadence of dancers' feet. “‘Mecanix' unites the industrial rhythm of hardshoe with lyrical softshoe, and their ability to complement and play off each other. It's light and dark, graceful and powerful, and the interaction between hardshoe and softshoe dancers lends itself to a dynamic experience,” said Kessler.
And, see the company's award-winning choreography, Gillie, newly updated for the upcoming 2012 World Championships in Wexford, Ireland! In addition to qualifying for Worlds, Belisama also placed third at the October 2011 North American Championships in Chicago; every one of the eleven dancers to compete took home medals. “The challenge of Irish dancing is awesome. It really makes you think, and you have to work hard. What I like most about our performances is showing people there is another (more contemporary) side to Irish dancing,” said dancer Sofia Bomse, who is beginning her advanced level training. Over fifty of the renowned Belisama dancers will take the stage in Santa Fe for ‘Rhythm of Fire.'
The evening will also showcase new choreography by Belisama students and alumnae Elizebeth Barnes, Deena Rice, Natalie Smith, Shannon Kossmann, and Maria Jones. “Founded in large part to empower students to be choreographers, one of my biggest goals with the Belisama company is to create a balance between performance, training, competition, and choreography. Choreography by students is a keystone of the program as a whole, and a feature of the show. The dancers always come up with something new and fresh, and the performance is an important place for them to see the audience respond to their work,” said Bellis.

Sunday Spiritual Gathering
Location: Everyday Center for Spiritual Living 1380 Vegas Verdes 505-629-9633Calligraphers Offer Free Demonstrations and Hands-On Tips

Color and Design for Tapestry Weavers with Cornelia Theimer Gardella
Location: Espanola Valley Fiber Arts Center 505-747-3577What is good design? Are there basic rules which can be followed (or broken)? How can tapestry ideas be translated into appealing designs which engage the viewer? This class focuses on putting basic design and color principles into practice on paper and at the loom. The practical design process will address questions of abstraction and simplification as tools for giving voice to the essential. Students will first work on a tapestry design for a small tapestry or a sampler for a larger tapestry which they will then weave during the class. Exercises will include the exploration of basic design elements such as lines and shapes, proportions and color relationships. The practical weaving part of the course will be tailored to each student's previous knowledge and all necessary tapestry techniques will be covered. Students are strongly encouraged to bring their own tapestry ideas and designs to class. When taken in combination with Color Theory in the Dye Studio in February both classes together offer students the entire artistic process - from design to dye studio to loom.
Cornelia Theimer Gardella weaves abstract tapestries using her own hand-dyed wool. Born, raised and educated in Germany, Cornelia came to New Mexico in 2005 to study traditional Fiber Arts at NNMC under Karen Martinez and contemporary tapestry with James Koehler. Together with James Koehler and Rebecca Mezoff, she was part of the international tapestry exhibition Interwoven Traditions: New Mexico and Bauhaus which was shown in Albuquerque and Erfurt, Germany in 2010. She teaches at Ghost Ranch and EVFAC. Be inspired at www.corneliatheimer.com.

Our Town by Thornton Wilder
Location: Santa Fe Playhouse 142 East DeVargas Street Santa Fe, NM (505) 988-4262Our Town, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, changed the landscape of American theater when it was first presented at the McCarter Theater in Princeton, New Jersey in 1938, and its message is just as powerful today. Set in the mythical small town of Grover's Corners, New Hampshire in the early 1900's, the play takes the audience on a magical, poignant, and haunting odyssey, sharing the joy and pain, loves and losses of a community searching to find meaning in the struggles of everyday life. Told on a bare stage in sparse, elegant detail - and guided by the mysterious, eternal presence of the Stage Manager - Our Town promises audiences an uplifting, touching, and deeply memorable journey featuring an ensemble of over 20 Santa Fe actors spanning three generations. Told on a bare stage in sparse, elegant detail - and guided by the mysterious, eternal presence of the Stage Manager - Our Town promises audiences an uplifting, touching, and deeply memorable journey featuring an ensemble of over 20 Santa Fe actors spanning three generations. It is directed by Ironweed founder and Artistic Director Scott Harrison, who directed Ironweed's critically-acclaimed productions of Doubt: a Parable and The Trip to Bountiful.
