A Super Bowl and a Souper Bowl within weeks of each other? Unheard of you say? Not in Santa Fe, The City Different! While we appreciate a good Super Bowl game, we really love the “Souper Bowl".  The Souper Bowl is a favorite Santa Fe event for locals and visitors alike and benefits The Food Depot, a local organization that raises money to provide approximately a quarter of a million meals for Northern New Mexicans in need.

It’s impossible to resist Super Bowl 50 fever, but for those who can’t wait for kickoff, Santa Fe’s ever-popular Souper Bowl makes our mouths water and stomachs smile. This savory soup competition is firmly established as a January taste explosion. Sample soups by several dozen of Santa Fe’s finest chefs. Four area restaurants will take home top honors for soups in the following categories: Best Cream, Best Seafood, Best Vegetarian, and Best Savory. Here’s the best part, your vote will decide which of our local favorite restaurants have the best soups in Santa Fe!

The event takes place on Saturday, January 30 from 12:00 to 2:30 pm at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center. Learn more and buy tickets today .

In addition to tasting your way through the soup competition, you will also have the opportunity to purchase cookbooks filled with recipes from Santa Fe chefs.

 Of Soup And Love, The First is the Best!

We all love soup and here’s your chance to prepare something “different” from the City Different. How about serving Green Chile Chicken Chowder soup at your Super Bowl soiree?

Green Chile Chicken Chowder

From: Del Charro Saloon

1 oz vegetable oil 1 white onion, medium chopped 2 garlic cloves, minced 5 chicken breast, skinless, grilled and diced 1.5 lb of chopped roasted green chile, mild 2 quarts half and half 1 lb potatoes, peeled and diced 1 lb corn kernels 6 oz red bell peppers, seeded and chopped 2 oz chicken base ¼ teaspoon white pepper 3 oz corn starch
Heat oil in 12 quarts stock pot, sauce and saute onions until golden add the garlic and saute for 1 minute. Add half and half, potatoes, chicken base, white pepper-cook for 10 to 15 minutes over medium heat. Add chicken breast, green chile, corn kernels and red bell pepper, reduce heat to medium-low and cook until the potatoes are fork-tender. In a small bowl make a slurry with the corn starch and ½ cup water. Bring to a boil and whisk the slurry into the pot until the soup is slightly thick. Adjust seasoning with salt. Notes: It will stick if heat is to high, so stir frequently. Roasted New Mexican Anaheim green chile is a good choice. Makes 3.5 quarts
