Experience the wonder of ancient forests, frozen lakes, and skies ablaze with the aurora borealis—all through choral soundscapes. The deep artistic traditions of the Nordic and Baltic regions have given the world some of the most hauntingly beautiful choral music ever composed. From the shimmering folk-inspired lyricism of Toivo Kuula's Sävel (Melody) to the ethereal modernism of Einojuhani Rautavaara's Lähtö (Departure), this program spans centuries of choral music vital to these community-centric cultures. Innovative vocal jazz, inspired by northern groups such as Sweden's Real Group and Finland's Rajaton, rounds out this varied program. A specialist in this repertoire, Artistic Director Joshua Habermann leads the 24-voice ensemble in a concert reminiscent of the very first performance he conducted with the Desert Chorale nearly 20 years ago.
