Many of the more than 150 Iroquois artists have attended IAIA since 1962 have built distinguished careers on the innovative foundations provided by the Institute. This exhibit is a visual testament to the stimulating atmosphere of interchange and experimentation generated by the IAIA and its impact on one of the most visible and cohesive groups indigenous to the northeast.

Throughout his career, James Drake has examined the theme of humanity in all of its triumphs, failures, and follies--including war; love and desire; greed, gluttony, and vanity; and the realities of life along the U.S.-Mexico border. The New Mexico Museum of Art exhibition James Drake: Salon of a Thousand Souls includes 19 sculptures and works on paper by the Santa Fe-based artist spanning nearly 25 years.

An exhibition of the work of Jaune Quick-to See Smith, one of the best-known Native America artists of the late twentieth century. Born in Montana, Smith is an enrolled Sqelix'u (Salish) member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation. She has lived and worked in New Mexico since 1976.

For hundreds of years craftspeople at Santo Domingo Pueblo (now known by its traditional name, Kewa) were known for exquisite shell, turquoise, and jet jewelry that they made and traded throughout the Southwest. But by the 1920s these traditional materials were scarce. Motivated by circumstance, jewelers at Santo Domingo discovered an exciting new medium: abandoned automobile battery casings.
