The City Different is offering an opportunity to experience a wide selection of global and cultural experiences during the yearlong, citywide festival. Many Santa Fe institutions – the New Mexico Museum of Art, Santa Fe Opera, the Lensic Performing Arts Center and our own singular and unique Santa Fe cultural markets – have come together in this effort to showcase, first-rate performances and first-class art and culture from around our globe.
Museum Exhibitions
Into the Future: The Cultural Power In Native American Art

This exhibit at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture features nearly 100 objects by more than fifty artists from the museum’s collections as well as others borrowed from collectors and artists. Sponge Bob Square Pants, Pac Mac, and Curious George, all sporting a particularly Native American twist, are just a few images from popular mainstream culture seen in the exhibition. Various media will be on view such as traditional clothing and jewelry, pottery and weaving, photography and video, through to comics and onto cyberspace.
Be Here Now: Summer of Love Santa Fe

A flashback to the social experimentation and activism that catalyzed the nation’s young people during the 1960’s is captured in Be Here Now: Summer of Love Santa Fe. The exhibitions tell a broader story than any one exhibition can, providing meaningful context and texture to this revolutionary time.

New Acquisitions 2011-2017
The IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts (MoCNA) is the country’s only museum for exhibiting, collecting and interpreting the most progressive work of contemporary Native artists. (Photo courtesy of IAIA)This exhibit highlights newly acquired work over the past six years from MoCNA’s Permanent Collection. New Acquisitions 2011-2017 demonstrates the museum’s commitment to collect works that are visionary and a testament to IAIA’s innovative spirit. The show is open now through January 21, 2018.
Syria: Cultural Patrimony Under Threat
See the effects of Syria’s ongoing civil war that threatened to destroy Syrian culture. (Photo courtesy of the New Mexico History Museum)Partnering with Curators Without Borders, a non-profit that specializes in innovative museum collaborations for humanitarian response, the exhibition highlights the vast collection of albumen prints, showing not only the historic sites now destroyed in Syria, but representations of its people in adjacent collections within the Photo Archives. You will see 642 photographs of historic sites in Syria taken between 1899 and 1909 during three separate expeditions to Syria. The exhibit runs through December 31, 2017.

The Prado In Santa Fe

Enjoy 92 mounted reproductions of the greatest works of art from the Museo del Prado in Madrid—representing the work of some of the greatest painters of the 14th–19th centuries. The exhibition is displayed in the beautiful sylvan setting of Cathedral Park, where nature and architecture conspire to create the perfect outdoor gallery. This free exhibit runs until October 29, 2017.
Center for Contemporary Arts
Tom Joyce: Everything at Hand continues Joyce’s explorations of iron a profoundly symbolic material whose regenerative matter, aesthetic malleability and cultural meaning. The 2017 season at the cinematheque will also feature an outstanding line-up including the Radical Southwest Film Series, Santa Fe Opera Film Series, and Farms, Films, Food: A Santa Fe Celebration.

Objects of Art Santa Fe

Objects of Santa Fe rolls into The City Different and features 70+ exhibitors, with material ranging from contemporary to historic. The show will include paintings, sculpture, furniture, books, fashion, jewelry, textiles, and tribal, folk, American Indian, African, and Asian art. The event will take place at El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe from August 10 through August 13, 2017.

The 2nd Annual Zuni Show on August 19 and 20, 2017 comes to Santa Fe at the Scottish Rite Temple. Last year’s show was voted as one of the “top ten native art events in the western hemisphere” by the readers of First American Art Magazine. The Zuni Show will showcase art from the Zuni Pueblo. Additionally, the show presents educational information that highlights various aspects of Zuni culture, language and way of life.

Santa Fe Desert Chorale

Now in its 35th year, the Santa Fe Desert Chorale presents two festivals a year featuring a wide range of literature from around the world. The 2017 Summer Festival Season has begun and runs through August 13 and will include four distinct concert programs—Liberté, Justice, The Hope of Loving, and Music from a Secret Chapel. The Chorale is truly national in scope and for that you will want to be sure to save the date for the 2017 Winter Festival Season, Home for the Holidays, which is scheduled from December 16 to December 23, 2017.

The lineup of events will include “Brief Encounters” which brings together three fifteen-minute operas performed by young rising stars of the opera world. Soprano Anna Christy will bring her sparkling voice to stage and Stars of American Ballet will grace the Lensic stage. Santa Fe Pro Musica brings together outstanding musicians, to inspire and educate audiences of all ages through the performance of great music. On September 23-24, 2017 Santa Fe Pro Musica brings Nadja’s Concert featuring Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, violin playing and conducting the passionate Four Seasons of Buenos Aires by Astor Piazzolla. This concert takes place the Lensic Performing Arts Center. Now in its 36th season, other concerts include Beethoven Piano Concertos, Part II, Love the Magician, Visionaries, Mozart and Friends, Escher String Quartet, Danish String Quartet, St. Lawrence Quartet, A Baroque Christmas, and Baroque Holy Week. As you can see there’s so much to choose from in the coming year!
